DORNIER AVIATIK MUSEUM FRIEDRICHSHAFEN

The intention of the new Dornier Museum is to present a historical pageant of aeronautical and space travel, with special emphasis being placed on the range of developments and research work which can be attributed to the Dornier family. The exhibits will be presented over an area of 5000 m² and will include twelve historical aircrafts. The competition entry submitted by Ramseier & Associates Ltd. is inspired by the hangar designs and hall constructions produced by the engineers of the mid twentieth century, continuing this tradition on the strength of modern materials.

The size of some of the exhibits dictates that the building must do without intermediate supports, resulting in an aluminium clad, steel ribbed roof construction spanning the entire building. The overall impression of streamlined dynamism is itself a tribute to aeronautical design. As the building provides direct access to the runway of Friedrichshafen airport, the possibility of experiencing the exhibits in operation remains available to visitors.
