AFG Shopping Arena St. Gallen
Mall architecture (1st prize competition)

The entire mall complex is situated underground and therefore beyond the reach of natural sources of light. To compensate for this, the main mall, which is 200 meters long and directly below the football field, has white floors that contrast with the anthracite color of the ceiling. A simple and unobtrusive, yet sophisticated lighting concept provides for bright illumination of the floor, whilst giving the ceiling the appearance of being suspended in mid air.

At the same time, it creates a subtle effect that give both visitors and shops the sense of being ‘on center-stage’, so to speak. The color scheme for the sales area below and the entrance area from the car park is almost completely white, the only contrast being the undulating floor areas, which provide a stimulating challenge to the matrix of pillars that the structure demands.
