Dornier Aviatik Museum Friedrichshafen

The new Dornier Museum presents a historical pageant of aeronautical and space travel, with special emphasis on the developments and research work that can be attributed to the Dornier family. The exhibition  covers a space of 5000 sq.m and includes twelve historical aircraft. The entry submitted by Ramseier & Associates Ltd. was inspired by traditional, mid-20th century hangar designs and constructions but  involved the use of modern materials.

The size of some of the exhibits made the integration of intermediate supports impossible, resulting in an aluminum-clad, steel-ribbed roof construction spanning the entire building. The overall impression of streamlined dynamism is in itself a tribute to aeronautical design. The building provides direct access to the Friedrichshafen airport runway, which gives visitors an opportunity to experience the exhibits in operation.
